July 9, 2019  |  Parent Talks Podcast  |  By Encompass

Whether it’s a tablet, cell phone, television, or computer, kids have access to a whole lot of screens these days. While we know it’s important to monitor how much time they spend on these devices, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. On this episode, we’ll be tackling the deeper issues of kids and technology—like how we can use research to determine whether an app is really educational and how to help our kids develop good habits that will continue even when mom and dad are no longer looking over their shoulder.

  • The American Academy of Pediatrics provides guidelines and tips on how to help your children learn healthy concepts of digital use and citizenship. In 2019, they released a study called “Parents, toddlers interact more when reading print books vs. e-books.” They also have some videos on recommendations for children’s media use.
  • Common Sense Media is a great online resource that reviews movies, TV shows, books, apps, and games to create ratings and recommendations of appropriate media for different age groups.
  • You can always check out our Resource Library for more activities, articles, videos, apps, and websites recommended by the Encompass team.
