Evidence-Based Social Skills Classes—Fun, Engaging and Important.

10435898_10152582606943061_3585714125832213302_nFunctional social skills are crucial to success in life. Many of these complex skills are learned during childhood. Children are expected to observe, interpret and respond in social situations all day long. For some children, this can be a real challenge. Encompass offers social skills coaching for children from preschool age through adolescence. Weekly one-hour sessions, led by two therapists, teach important skills in a fun and engaging manner. Each group is comprised of four to five children matched up based upon their skill levels and genders. We use an evidence-based social skills curriculum, SuperFlex, created by Michelle Garcia Winner. The four core components of this curriculum are:

Early developing skills

  • listening to others
  • following directions
  • maintaining eye contact
  • keeping a calm body during interactions and greetings

Interpersonal skills

  • turn-taking, sharing
  • requesting
  • responding
  • initiating
  • perspective taking
  • conversing

Problem-solving skills

  • conflict resolution
  • cooperation
  • emotional regulation
  • recognizing big problems vs. small problems

Nonverbal-communication skills

  • reading others’ body language and emotional state
  • personal space awareness
